Regular Membership Regular Membership is open to any full-time or part-time public information officer employed by any local, county, state or federal Emergency Services Agency or others as determined by majority vote of the Board of Directors.

Membership is based on a calendar year. All memberships are individual (not agency) and are non-transferable.

Click here to apply for membership.

Associate Membership Associate Membership is open to persons who held membership and for reasons stated in the by-laws are unable to continue as regular members, to persons actively employed in government emergency services but who work in areas outside of public information, or to persons actively engaged in public information duties outside of government emergency services. All requests for associate membership will be given to your regional director who will forward them (with comments if necessary) to the board of directors for a vote. Associate members will not be allowed to vote in any Association business.

Associate members will be allowed to attend the annual conference at the member conference rate. Associate members will not be allowed to hold elected or appointed office.

Honorary Membership Honorary Membership is open to persons who support the philosophies and causes of the NIOA but who do not meet the criteria for regular or associate membership. Prospective honorary members must be nominated in writing by a regular member in good standing, with the nomination forwarded through the nominating member's Regional Director. The Regional Director shall then forward the nomination to the Board of Directors for a vote with the Director's comments and recommendation.

Honorary members will not be allowed to vote in any Association business. Honorary members will be allowed to attend the annual conference at a rate to be decided by the Board of Directors but may not participate in any group or panel discussions unless approved by a majority vote of conference attendees, and may be excluded from attending some sessions entirely at the discretion of the Board of Directors. Honorary members will not be eligible to hold any elected or appointed offices. Honorary members may receive the Association newsletter and regular mailings, but will be excluded from receiving any directories, mailing lists or rosters containing NIOA membership information.

Honorary Membership Members are eligible to attend the annual NIOA Training Conference, a multi-day event which seeks to organize and train Public Information Officers through workshops, seminars and case presentations by PIOs who have handled some of the biggest news events of our time. The gathering also offers unrivaled opportunities for meeting and networking with your professional peers from across North America.

Honorary Membership Members automatically receive a subscription to the NIOA News, the official publication of the NIOA, with articles and photos from around the nation, all specifically written and compiled to benefit you, the Public Information Officer. You’ll also be eligible to receive discounts at selected PIO classes offered around the country, and have unrestricted access to all areas of our organization’s expanding Web Site.
